Julia Fiona Roberts was born in Atlanta on October 28 1967 to Betty Lou Bredemus and Walter Grady Roberts. Roberts belongs to the Robertses' fourth generation to live in the Atlanta region, beginning by her grandfather John Pendleton Roberts a farmer. Her father took an early interest in theatre. When he was a student at Emory University he appeared in various productions both on and off campus. He joined the military in 1953. While working in Biloxi Mississippi, was cast in a military production that included Betty Lou Bredemus who was part of Air Force. They married in 1955. Their first child, Eric Anthony, was born in the year 1956. In 1957 the couple left the military and Walter began his studies in Tulane University in New Orleans Louisiana. Walter was employed as a technician by Atlanta Academy Theater and Harrington Scenic and Lighting Studio to be a part of the production team for Bum Bum and His Buddies. The show was filmed in Decatur Georgia. Walter and Betty Lou financed their own production of a local Sunday morning children's show, Bum Bum and His Buddies. In 1964 Walter and Betty Lou established The Actors and Writers Workshop. It lasted for 6 years. They were joined by Lelisa Billingsley (also known as Lisa) as well as Julia (also known as Julie) at the time.
